PROVO — A controlled burn of farmland took off faster than expected, turning a three-day project into a one-day event.

But the farmer's advance preparation contained the Friday fire, Deputy Fire Chief Tom Kuhlmann said. Firefighters stood by as a precaution.

The fire coughed up a tremendous amount of smoke, which ignited a lot of curiosity.

"We got a lot of phone calls," a dispatcher said. No homes were threatened.

The farmer planned to burn about 40 acres in southwest Provo near Utah Lake, but because of drought conditions, the burn will likely be finished Saturday, Kuhlmann said.
