Like a tree with deep roots, we must establish a firm foundation in the gospel to weather the spiritual storms that beset us. A sure foundation is built from three sources: the scriptures, the words of the prophets and the Holy Ghost.

Having the scriptures was so important for Lehi and his family that the Lord directed Nephi to kill Laban to obtain them. The people of Zarahemla, on the other hand, dwindled and became corrupted without the scriptures.

As regards the prophets, "Following the prophets will help protect us against the storms of life and lead us to Christ."

Christ talked of the last of the three, the Holy Ghost, in the upper room prior to his crucifixion, saying the Father would give the apostles "another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever." The influence of the Holy Ghost was felt in Ghana in 1989, when church members and missionaries were persecuted. Non-African missionaries were expelled and members were not allowed to use their own meetinghouses. Thus, the members worshipped in their homes and relied on the influence of the Holy Ghost during what came to be known as "the freeze."

"There were those who had fallen away" after the freeze was lifted 18 months later. "Their roots had been shallow and their foundation weak. The foundation of the church in Ghana today is built on the faith of those who weathered the storm. They were deeply rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ."
