MASHBURN OUT: New Orleans Hornets forward Jamal Mashburn will be out six to eight weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Monday. The surgery to remove loose particles from Mashburn's knee took place in Miami.

Mashburn missed all eight preseason games and missed the Hornets' first three regular-season games with a bone bruise on his right knee. He was placed on the injured list on Oct. 27.

The All-Star forward led the Hornets in scoring last season, averaging 21.6 points.

PIPPEN AILING: Chicago Bulls forward Scottie Pippen will be sidelined at least one week after missing Monday night's game against Houston because of a sore left knee.

Pippen felt pain in the knee before the Bulls' shootaround earlier in the day. He had an MRI and wasn't with the team for the game. It's the same knee he had arthroscopic surgery on last season.

HEAT MOVES: The Miami Heat signed free-agent guard Kirk Penney on Monday and placed forward Samaki Walker on the injured list with an injured right shoulder.

Penney, undrafted out of Wisconsin this year, was released by Minnesota last month after averaging 6.1 points and 2.9 rebounds in seven preseason games.

Walker averaged 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games this season before his shoulder began hurting. It is not known when the injury occurred.
