Former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D'Amato is engaged to marry Katuria Smith, a Manhattan lawyer and his girlfriend of four years.

D'Amato proposed to Smith at a party Saturday at the Bridgeview Yacht Club on Long Island. The gathering had been planned as a celebration of Smith's 38th birthday. Instead, the 66-year-old D'Amato unveiled a cake reading: "Will you marry me?"

The wedding will be held next summer.
