WASHINGTON — Michael Jordan scored 43, becoming the first 40-year-old in NBA history to score 40 or more points and also hitting the game-winning shot as the Washington Wizards beat the New Jersey Nets 89-86 Friday night.
Already the oldest player in NBA history to score 40, Jordan made 18 of 30 shots and 7 of 8 free throws. Jordan's driving layup with 34 seconds to play put Wizards ahead 87-86.
Jerry Stackhouse, an 87 percent foul shooter who was 0-for-4 from the line to that point, made a pair to finish the scoring as the Wizards broke a six-game losing streak to the Atlantic Division leaders.
Richard Jefferson scored 25 points to lead the Nets.
LAKERS 92, TRAIL BLAZERS 84: Kobe Bryant hit a running jumper with 9 seconds remaining to reach 40 points for the eighth consecutive game as the Lakers defeated the Trail Blazers 92-84 Friday night.
The last player to score 40 in as many consecutive games was Jordan, who did it in nine straight early in the 1986-87 season. Wilt Chamberlain scored at least 40 in 14 consecutive games early in the 1961-62 season.
It was Bryant's 12th game in a row with at least 35 points.
Shaquille O'Neal added 24 points and 12 rebounds in his first game back after sitting out three straight because of a sore left knee and right big toe. He shot 7-of-10 on free throws in the fourth quarter as the Lakers beat Portland for the fifth straight time at Staples Center.
MAGIC 110, BULLS 96: In Orlando, Fla., Tracy McGrady scored a career-high 52 points in three quarters and Drew Gooden added 22 points and 11 rebounds in his Orlando debut.
McGrady was 15-of-32 from the field and 16-for-20 from the line to eclipse the 50 points he scored last season against Washington. McGrady finished one point shy of the franchise record of 53 set by Shaquille O'Neal in 1993-94.
McGrady, who sat out the entire fourth quarter, also came up a point short of Allan Houston's NBA season-high of 53.
Gooden shot 11-of-16 from the field, and Orlando's other newcomer, Gordan Giricek, had 15 points. Jay Williams led Chicago with 20 points.
RAPTORS 92, SUNS 89: In Toronto, Antonio Davis had 22 points, including the final four of the game.
Shawn Marion went 3-for-19 from the field and finished with eight points for the Suns, who have lost four of five since the All-Star break.
After Vince Carter missed a jumper and Morris Peterson missed a short jumper, Davis made a tip-in to give Toronto a 90-89 lead with 7.8 seconds left.
Stephon Marbury's driving layup attempt hit off the back of the rim, and Marion missed an ensuing tip-in attempt. Davis then made two free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining to give Toronto a 92-89 lead. Marbury just missed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer as the ball hit off the side of the rim.
TIMBERWOLVES 103, PISTONS 96: In Minneapolis, Kevin Garnett had 34 points and 16 rebounds as the Minnesota Timberwolves set a franchise record with 13 consecutive home wins.
Troy Hudson added 12 points and 11 assists for the Timberwolves, who nearly blew a 24-point second-half lead. Wally Szczerbiak added 20 points.
Chauncey Billups, in his first time back at Target Center after leaving Minnesota for Detroit last summer, led Detroit's second-half surge. Billups finished with 23 points and seven assists.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Jon Barry made it 89-83, and Billups scored seven consecutive points to pull the Pistons to 95-94 with 1:37 remaining. Hudson answered with a long jumper and a 3-pointer to give Minnesota a 100-94 lead with 48 seconds left.
MAVERICKS 100, ROCKETS 85: At Houston, Dirk Nowitzki had 34 points and 11 rebounds and led a 14-2 second-quarter spurt as Dallas completed a season sweep of the Houston Rockets.
Dallas won its fifth straight game and beat the Rockets for the fourth time this season.
Steve Nash shot 6-for-6 and scored 14 for Dallas, and Nick Van Exel added 13 points and seven assists off the bench. Shawn Bradley had 12 points, seven rebounds and six blocks.
Steve Francis led Houston with 19 points and Yao Ming had 18 points and 11 rebounds.
HORNETS 125, GRIZZLIES 123 (OT): At New Orleans, Jamal Mashburn ended a 50-point performance by grabbing his own rebound and sinking a short jumper with 1 second left in overtime.
In tying his career high and setting a franchise record for points in a game, Mashburn shot 17-of-33 and hit all 12 of his foul shots.
Jason Williams tied the game at 123 with an off-balance layup before Mashburn's final shot. Memphis then inbounded along the sideline to 3-point specialist Wesley Person, but his rushed shot from the corner was long.
The Hornets' victory spoiled a strong Grizzlies debut for Mike Miller, who came off the bench to lead Memphis with 23 points.
David Wesley scored 35 points, his most as a Hornet.
SUPERSONICS 88, BUCKS 58: At Seattle, Brent Barry, replacing the departed Gary Payton at point guard, had a career-high 16 assists to go with 16 points as the Seattle SuperSonics beat the Milwaukee Bucks 88-58 Friday night.
Playing their first game since making their five-player trade that sent Payton to Milwaukee in exchange for Ray Allen, the Sonics had only eight players available and all of them contributed.
WARRIORS 111, KNICKS 107: At Oakland, Calif., Antawn Jamison scored 31 points and hit the go-ahead shot with 55 seconds left, and Gilbert Arenas scored all 14 of his points in the final 6 1/2 minutes as Golden State beat the New York Knicks 111-107 Friday night.
