The Skyline swim team did it once more. The Eagles swept the Region 3 meet Tuesday to remain undefeated in dual meets on the season.
However, Skyline head coach Rod Horton said he's seen better. "We had great swims today, but they weren't what we expected," Horton noted. "Some were there, some weren't."
Horton's girls blew by their closest competitor, Hunter, by more than 200 points, 467.5 to 231. The Kearns girls weren't far down in the pack, coming up with 228.5 points.
The Skyline boys cut it closer, as only 90 points separated the Eagles from the Wolverine boys, 331 to 241.
Junior Christa Williams' individual performance was the only one that stood out to Horton. She placed first in both the 50 free (25.33 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1 minute, 2.36 seconds). Williams' victory in the 50 free was over Kearns' Jennifer Fredsall, who had the top 5A time going into the meet.
Skyline freshman KC Albiston won both the 200 free and 500 free — the latter by more than 28 seconds over her closest competitor, teammate Aliria Munoz.
Kearns' Ozzie Gardner continued his short-sprints domination, winning the boys' 50 in 21.19 and the 100 free in 46.45.
Teammate/co-captain Stan Wirtz placed second in both, never more than a second and a half behind Gardner.
Horton said the waveless technology at the new Murray pool may have helped shave a few seconds off in some races. Gardner's times, however, remain quick no matter the circumstances. "They're fast in any pool," he said.
Horton will prepare his swimmers for the state meet Feb. 14-15. Brighton's girls will be fired up to face his team since Skyline defeated the Bengals at state last year, ending a long string of state titles.
"They're a little ticked off about last year," he said.
