Bishop Joseph Lennox Federal, who led the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City from 1960 to 1980, died Aug. 31, 2000, at the age of 90. In a letter of condolences and sympathy to family members and members of the Catholic community, the First Presidency wrote, in part:
"Bishop Federal was truly a good and generous man who gave freely and unselfishly of his time and talents to his fellowmen. His many years of service touched and changed many lives for the better.
"We have appreciated Bishop Federal's spirit of cooperation and unity as we have worked together over the years on numerous community projects. His sense of humor and warmth have made our years of association very enjoyable."
