SPANISH FORK — An amended Main Street parking ordinance was approved Tuesday by the Spanish Fork City Council to remove side streets from the time-restricted areas.
The original ordinance set a three-hour time limit on Main Street to stop residents from using the street to sell their used vehicles. It also included a half-block extension on side streets.
The cost of putting up signs on side streets and time-consuming police enforcement were cited as reasons for the change. But some say the determining factor was the negative reaction from city residents living on the side streets.
Most were concerned at restrictions in front of their homes.
"They didn't complain to the council (as a whole), but they did complain to individual council members," Mayor Dale Barney said.
New signs placed over existing signs on Main Street were relatively inexpensive. Posting side streets would have required new metal poles and extensive labor to install them.
That could have cost taxpayers some $12,000, Barney said.
The restrictions, which have been in place about a month, have already reduced the number of vehicles with "For Sale" signs parking on Main Street, according to police.
Police have been giving out warnings to those in violation of the ordinance.
The new ordinance retains no parking restrictions around the city library at Main Street and Center, and on Main Street from 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The three hour day-time limit affects Main Street between I-15 and 400 South.
