A South Carolina woman was killed and three other people injured in a rollover accident on I-80 near Saltair on Saturday morning.

Killed was: Kristina Peak, 20, Walhalla, S.C.

Peak was a passenger in a sport utility vehicle headed east at 8:45 a.m. four miles from Salt Lake City when the driver apparently fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Terry Woodard said. The SUV rolled 2 1/2 times into the median between the east- and west-bound traffic lanes.

Kristina Peak, her sister, Emily Peak, 22, and driver Angela Reid, 21, both also of Walhalla, were ejected from the vehicle.

Medical helicopters transported Kristina Peak to LDS Hospital, while Emily Peak and Angela Reid went to University Hospital. Kristina Peak suffered severe head trauma and died Saturday afternoon, according to a press release from UHP.

Emily Peak, who along with her sister was a passenger in the back seat of the SUV, remained in extremely critical condition Saturday night. Reid was listed in critical condition.

Robert Reid, 28, of Salt Lake City, who was the front-seat passenger in the vehicle, suffered minor injuries, and was treated and released from LDS Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance.

None of the four were wearing seat belts, Woodard said.

The four were apparently returning to Salt Lake after a trip to Wendover. Troopers investigating the accident said speed did not appear to factor, although there was some indication that alcohol may have played a role, Woodard added.

The accident closed inside traffic lanes in both directions for a short time and remains under investigation.
