Lynn A. McKinlay, 88, a former KSL-TV and radio personality/producer, communications professor at Brigham Young University and well-known narrator, died at his home in Provo on Thursday, May 1, 2003.
Mr. McKinlay joined KSL Radio in the fall of 1937 for a broadcast career that spanned almost two decades. He eventually became a KSL morning personality, known as "Golden Voice of the West." He also became involved in production work on KSL Radio, and then later KSL-TV.
In 1955, he joined the BYU staff as a special adviser for radio and TV. Later, he became an assistant professor of communication and spent two years teaching at LDS College in Hawaii.
He also had enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse of Theater Arts with the aspiration of becoming a stage actor. He won second place in a "Gateway to Hollywood" acting contest but eventually pursued broadcast work instead.
However, Mr. McKinlay continued as a regular performer in the 1940s and 1950s in various productions in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. He was a reader and performer and at times during his career portrayed Joseph Smith in Tabernacle productions.
He also was a well-known speaker and a sought-after lecturer in the BYU "Know Your Religion" series. He co-directed eight church history tours and was narrator for the Utah centennial program in 1947.
Active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as bishop, a member of the Deseret Sunday School General Board, in the Genealogical Society of the church and in other callings. He was a temple sealer and had portrayed roles in the live Salt Lake Temple drama. He also published three church books.
Services will be Wednesday, May 7, 11 a.m. at the Edgewood Ward Chapel, 180 E. 3500 North, Provo. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., Provo, Tuesday, May 6, 6-8 p.m. or Wednesday at the chapel, one hour prior to services. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Hills.
