Richard Nielsen argues that free trade is dangerous to American citizens (Readers' Forum, June 13). This is just not accurate. How do trade barriers protect us? They only protect us from better products, a stronger economy and increase the likelihood of international war. In fact, the United States has prospered largely because of globalization and free trade.
Free trade does not attack culture or sovereignty. International agreements, in reality, strengthen economies, thus increasing national power. The development of the European Union has not destroyed any cultural traits of the Greeks or anyone else. The Europeans who are not benefiting are the ones who have not joined. There may be some flaws with the system of globalization, but overall it has proved to be very advantageous.
