A federal arrest warrant was issued last week for a man believed to be responsible for a triple homicide at a Salt Lake City convenience store parking lot.

Luis Alberto Salinas is believed to have fled to Mexico after allegedly shooting and killing three people May 31 at a 7-Eleven parking lot, 960 W. North Temple.

A charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution was filed against Salinas in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City.

Mexican law does not allow authorities to extradite someone back to the United States if they potentially could face the death penalty.

The federal warrant does not give authorities any extra power to go into Mexico and arrest Salinas. But if he re-enters the United States and is spotted in another state, it gives law enforcers the authority in other jurisdictions to arrest him.

Salinas was charged June 4 in 3rd District Court with three counts of capital homicide and two counts of aggravated kidnapping. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
