(Karpowitz)
1919 ~ 2003
Paul E. Rogers, devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away June 28, 2003.
Born to Ruby Johanna Shepherd and Herman Gustav Karpowitz August 11, 1919 in Salt Lake City, UT.
Paul grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School and the University of Utah (class of 1940). After his graduation from the University, he served in the Japanese-Hawaiian Mission, which was a great joy in his life. He loved Hawaii and its people. He still has many friends in Hawaii and his work in the Islands still has a legacy today. Following his mission, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served proudly in the Pacific during World War II as a supply officer with the 13th U.S. Navel Construction Battalion. He retired from the Navel Reserves as a Lieutenant Commander after 26 years of service.
Following the war, he returned to Hawaii where he was the assistant manager of the Canada Dry Bottling Co. While working in Hawaii, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Eggett. They were married in the Hawaiian Temple, June 11, 1949. Soon after their marriage, they returned to Salt Lake City where he managed the Miller Meat Co. with his father and later became owner. Paul and his "shop" were fixtures downtown until 1978.
Paul loved to work in his yard, coin collecting, trains, sports, travel, anything Hawaiian and to be with his family.
Paul was a faithful member of the LDS Church and served in numerous church callings. He served as a clerk under several bishops. He especially enjoyed working in Scouting. He started one of the first Scout Troops in Hawaii while serving his mission and continued working in Scouting for over 50 years. He received the Silver Beaver award.
Paul is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 54 years; children Wayne (Michelle) Rogers, Salt Lake City, John (Christie) Rogers, Bountiful, UT, and five grandchildren. Preceded in death by brothers, Karl and John Karpowitz; sisters, Betty Ford and Allie Buttle.
The family would like to thank the many care givers, friends and neighbors that assisted Paul in his declining years.
