Salt Lake police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide of a married couple in downtown Salt Lake City.

The names of the couple, in their early 70s, have not been released pending notification of kin, Salt Lake Police Lt. John Cardona said.

The couple was discovered about 3 p.m. Wednesday by a daughter who normally stops by her parents' high-rise apartment at 120 S. 200 West each day to help them clean and run errands. On Wednesday she was to take one of her parents to a doctor's appointment, Cardona said.

Nobody answered when the daughter knocked. The daughter forced her way inside and "found the mother lying on the floor and her father hung on a noose on the bathroom door, both deceased," Cardona said.

Detectives are investigating a motive and the relationship between the husband and wife.

"We think, our preliminary investigation shows (the mother) may have been strangled," Cardona said.
