MORGAN — The Federal Aviation Administration was at the scene of a mountainside aircraft crash Monday night, sifting through pieces of the glider's broken nose, tail and pilot seating area.

The pilot and passenger, who remain unidentified and are ages 36 and 37, were transported by medical helicopter to LDS Hospital. One of the two men was unconscious and in critical condition. The other man suffered a fractured leg, cuts and abrasions but his condition was unknown, Morgan County deputy sheriff Scott Peay said.

The Twin Astir glider, which went down about 4:30 p.m. Monday above the city cemetery, was totalled.

"They just lost altitude and didn't quite make it over a mountain. They hit the top of the mountain, then went nose-end into the side," Peay said.

Search and rescue crews hiked into the area.

The glider is believed to have taken off from the airport in Mountain Green, about 10 miles away. It would have been towed by an aircraft with an engine before being released to glide on its own, Peay said.

Peay did not know where the glider was headed at the time of the accident.

The FAA is investigating the cause of the crash, said Debbie Taylor of the FAA's Seattle office.
