Kenyan author Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor has won the Caine Prize for African Writing for her story "Weight of Whispers."
The author, who was born in Nairobi and is executive director of the Zanzibar International Film Festival, collected the award Monday night in London for her tale of a Rwandan refugee after the 1994 genocide.
The $15,000 Caine Prize is given annually for a short story published in English by an African writer. Writers born anywhere on the African continent whose work reflects that cultural background are eligible.
