Hours after hosting 1,600 guests at his 85th birthday celebration, former South African President Nelson Mandela officially opened a new Johannesburg bridge named in his honor on Sunday.
Accompanied by President Thabo Mbeki and other dignitaries, the opening capped a week of birthday celebrations for the country's former president.
Mandela said the bridge was a symbol of all who fought to free South Africa of apartheid, the South African Press Association reported.
"I feel very humble indeed," Mandela said.
"There were many who had suffered more than I did," he said.
President Mbeki said the bridge was a symbol of the closing of divisions in the nation. "We must stand together as one nation," he said.
Mbeki was also present at Saturday night's celebrations at the Sandton Convention Center. Other guests at the banquet included celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Robert DeNiro, former South African President F.W. de Klerk, former U.S president Bill Clinton, his wife Hillary and daughter Chelsea.
