In areas with inadequate vegetation and water supply, the Bureau of Land Management is gathering wild horses in Utah and putting them up for adoption.
"We are doing everything possible to help these animals — hauling water to the herds, gathering them in some areas and monitoring the available water and forage throughout the state to ensure we have healthy herds," said Gus Warr, Utah BLM wild horse and burro program lead.
Amid the fifth consecutive year of drought, many horses throughout the state are suffering from poor health, dehydration and starvation, Warr said. To prevent further decline, the BLM has been hauling and pumping water to horses in nine locations statewide. In addition, the BLM recently gathered up horses in Vernal and is planning at least five additional gatherings throughout August and September.
