Since his seventh-grade son began playing football four years ago, Roy football coach Guy Andersen was never able to watch him play without worrying about what he was missing with his own team.

To avoid that problem again, Andersen stepped down last week after three seasons with the Royals.

"The last eight-10 years I have made professional decisions about football that haven't benefited my family," Andersen said. "This time I made a professional decision that benefits my family."

Andersen accepted a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. teaching position at a private school, which will allow him to be more involved with his family and his son's football.

"From a financial and hours standpoint and for my family I couldn't turn it down," Andersen said. "This gives me an opportunity to work with my son's team."

In six seasons as the coach at Ben Lomond and Roy, Andersen was a combined 19-41 and the Scots finished as the Class 3A runner-up in 1997.

"I'm leaving programs better than I found them," said Andersen. "We didn't win as many games as we wanted to, but we played better football than was there before."

Andersen's longtime assistant and offensive coordinator, Brian Berrong, was named his replacement. He was a head coach at Duchesne High School in 1999 before returning to Andersen's staff.

"He's very well qualified and the staff stayed intact," Andersen said. "The change over won't be that big."
