Obituary: Karen McPhie

1948 ~ 2003

Surrounded by loving family and friends, Patty McPhie slipped peacefully from this life on Sunday evening, September 14, 2003, in Vista, California. She fought a short, intense and courageous battle against pancreatic cancer and has left many dear friends.

Patty was born August 15, 1948, in Salt Lake City to Joseph M. and Ruth Buehner McPhie. Moving with her father's transfers in the Air Force, she lived in several states. She graduated from Crossland High School in Maryland in 1966 and went on to the University of Utah where she was a Utahna Cheerleader, and a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Patty had many talents and perfected everything she chose to do. She was an A student, a speedy typist, and she played the piano beautifully. She became a stewardess with Braniff Airlines and got to visit many places. She loved skiing and also the art of calligraphy.

Patty became a skilled massage therapist and a master astrologist. She created the cosmic I.D. card and a monthly postcard and had many loyal clients.

She was particularly fond of her job at Century 21 Sea Coast in Encinitas, California where she helped to keep things running efficiently in the office. Her co-workers enjoyed her fun personality and were exceptionally kind and loving when she suddenly became ill.

Above all, Patty treasured her lifelong friendships. She was gifted in her ability to see deep into the hearts of others. She was full of integrity and love. She had her own classy style and grace, and she loved to help others.

She even had a star officially named for her mother who died five years ago. She made a difference in many peoples' lives and she will be deeply missed.

Patty leaves behind her loyal cats, Arthur and Nadine, and many dear friends: Lucy and John Lipham, Janet Robinson, Rosalind Russell, Mike Evans, Darlene Tighe, Christine Healy, Kelly Buehner, LouAnn Taft, Georgia Hovey, and Trisha Ryan for whom the family is grateful for their consistent love and support to Patty.

She is survived by her father, Joseph M. McPhie, brothers, Mike and Craig (Marilyn) McPhie, sisters Kathy Crabb, Becky (Clark) Reeder, Debbie (Tim) Brown and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother, Ruth, and her brother-in-law, Rusty Crabb. Thanks to Dr. Gregory Teregis, and Elizabeth Hospice nurse Margaret for their compassion and help.

Kathy, Becky and Debbie will always love and remember their Patty by the sea. Private family services held in San Diego.
