LANSING, Mich. — To commemorate the completion of their new stake center, members of the Lansing Michigan Stake sponsored a "Tribute to Emergency Workers" concert Sept. 11 to thank all rescue and relief personnel who worked to save the building the night it was struck by arsonists.

Crews from eight fire stations responded to the fire on June 30, 2002, as well as ambulance crews from three cities and state police officers.

The concert was to thank them and their families for their effort and care in fighting to save the building, said Cheryl Haddock, stake public affairs director.

The concert was part of a three-day celebration commemorating the reconstruction of the building. Public and private open house tours were sponsored the next two days. Interest in the building has been high among the residents and media. An estimated 1,200 responded to offers to view the meetinghouse, including neighbors of the building who received personal invitations from youth going door-to-door.

The stake is planning an interfaith concert with a choir composed of members from various denominations. The new 24,500-square-foot building, which replaces the building that was originally dedicated by President Gordon B. Hinckley, will be dedicated Oct. 12.
