HONOLULU (AP) — Bus workers in this public transit-dependent city have ended a monthlong strike that made some new pedestrians lighter, and other commuters just lighter in the wallet.

Bus service resumes today on Oahu, an island of about 880,000 people with a bus system that normally provides about 250,000 rides a day. Workers voted Saturday to approve a new five-year contract, days after the City Council raised fares 25 cents to $2 to avoid cutbacks and driver layoffs.

Many people were eagerly awaiting stepping aboard a bus for the first time since the strike began Aug. 26, but others said they'll stick with the alternatives — from walking to bicycling to car pools — that got them through the shutdown.
