2003's list of those who were killed with alleged criminal intent:
1. ESCALANTE, Jan. 26 — Garfield County sheriff's deputy David Jones was shot and killed after pulling over two people suspected of drinking and driving on a rural dirt road. Earl Leston Barnes, 53, pleaded guilty in June to aggravated murder and was sentenced to life in prison without parole. William Byron Allred, 51, the driver, pleaded guilty in September to aggravated robbery and was sentenced to five years to life in prison.
2, 3. SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 3 — Jose R. Talacon, 21, and Jaime Nunez-Guiterrez, 31, were found shot near 1200 East and 200 South about 1:30 a.m. after police were called to a traffic accident. Talacon was lying on the street and Nunez-Guiterrez was still inside a vehicle, which had rolled into a parked car. Both victims were transported to local hospitals in critical condition before succumbing to their injuries on Feb. 4. A newspaper carrier later found the body of James Gary Vigil near where the other two bodies were discovered. Investigators determined Vigil shot Talacon and Nunez-Guiterrez before taking his own life. Investigators believe the men got into an argument with each other while trying to purchase drugs.
4. WEST VALLEY CITY. Feb. 14 — Bojan Mamuzic, 17, was shot and killed at a Chevron gas station near 3200 West and 3500 South after two rival Asian gangs with a long history of violence had a chance meeting. David Moukdahan, 21, is believed to have shot Mamuzic and another man who was seriously injured. Moukdahan committed suicide in a Sandy apartment several hours later.
5, 6. WEST VALLEY CITY, Feb. 21 — LaRae Marara Sullivan, 34, and her 4-year-old daughter, Kehaulani Nui Sullivan, were stabbed to death inside their residence near 3300 South 6700 West. Sullivan's husband, Brian Christopher Sullivan, 38, was arrested at Valley Mental Health in Murray after a relative who had spoken with him called police. Brian Sullivan was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of criminal homicide. In September, a judge found Sullivan competent to stand trial. He is scheduled to be back in court Jan. 26.
7. MAGNA, Feb. 22 — Mary Ann Martinez, 51, was shot to death by her boyfriend, Uriel Treto-Luna, 58, outside her residence near 2900 South and 8400 West. After shooting Martinez, Treto-Luna dragged her body to the back yard and committed suicide. Martinez had called police about 2:30 a.m. Deputies arrived just as Martinez and Treto-Luna were struggling for a handgun in the carport. During the struggle Treto-Luna shot Martinez.
8. WEST VALLEY CITY, Feb. 23 — Tammy Seely, 33, was shot and killed by her estranged husband, Tyson Seely, 34, following an argument in their living room near 3300 West and 3200 South. After shooting his wife, Tyson Seely committed suicide. The couple's three children, ages 16, 13 and 4, and an adult friend of Tammy Seely's were in another room in the house when the shootings occurred.
9. OGDEN, March 8 — Serafin Condie was shot and killed at a house in the 2900 block of Lincoln Street. Jose Lopez, 45, was arrested for investigation of homicide. Investigators said Lopez believed he had been disrespected by Condie. A jury trial is scheduled to begin March 29.
10. BOX ELDER COUNTY, April 12 — Alberto Hernandez, 48, was killed from blunt force trauma to the back of his head. His body was found in a field near Plymouth. He had apparently been there for a week or two before he was found. The Logan resident was reported missing by his family March 28. Gerardo Gonzalez, 35, was found guilty of murder by a jury in November. He was sentenced to five years to life at the Utah State Prison. The motive for the murder appeared to be robbery. Chanielle Sartin, 24, was originally arrested for investigation of homicide but the charges were later amended to obstruction of justice.
11. MIDVALE, April 25 — Martin Dominguez, 19, was shot in the face and killed in a dispute over a woman. William "Smokey" Lopez Madrigal, 21, took Dominguez to an apartment near 8200 South and 550 West where he convinced Dominguez that a party was being thrown for him. Instead, Madrigal wanted to confront Dominguez about his alleged relationship with Madrigal's estranged wife. When Madrigal showed Dominguez a gun, Dominguez began to laugh. That infuriated Madrigal and he shot him. Madrigal admitted in court to being high on drugs at the time. He pleaded guilty to first-degree felony murder and was sentenced to five years to life in prison.
12. LAYTON, April 27 — Brian M. Washington was shot and killed by Steven Leroy Richardson, who then committed suicide. Both were members of the 388th Fighter Wing at Hill Air Force Base. Richardson was upset that his wife, Shawnti Richardson, was allegedly having an affair with Washington. Steven found the two together and shot both of them before turning the gun on himself. She was injured critically but survived.
13. SALT LAKE CITY, April 27 — Midge Perkins-Uribe, 28, was shot on the corner of 200 South and 200 East at random by a mentally ill man, Jeffrey C. Mayer, 26, who then committed suicide. Uribe was shot once in the head and her shoulder. Mayer's family said he suffered from schizophrenia. He was, however, able to legally purchase a gun at a pawn shop the day before the murder.
14. PARK CITY, May 8 — Michael Jon Hirschey, 38, was found shot to death inside his apartment in the 1700 block of Kearns Boulevard. Erik K. Low, 35, of Salt Lake City was arrested for homicide. Low allegedly shot Hirschey after the two got into an argument while they watched the NBA playoffs with a group of friends. The case was bound over for trial in August although a trial date has not yet been set.
15. SALT LAKE CITY, May 17 — Carlos Lopez, 49, was found stabbed to death about 5:30 p.m. in Pioneer Park near 400 South and 400 West. Investigators believe Lopez was killed over a drug dispute. No arrests have been made.
16, 17, 18. SALT LAKE CITY, May 31 — Lori Gurule, Aristeo Torres and Juan Alberto Ruiz were shot and killed while sitting in a Suburban at a 7-Eleven, 960 W. North Temple about 3 a.m. after leaving a party. Luis Alberto Salinas, 22, Gurule's ex-boyfriend, was charged with three counts of capital homicide and two counts of aggravated kidnapping. Police believe Salinas has fled to Mexico and are working with the State Department to locate him and have him returned to Utah.
19, 20. OREM, June 14 — Pablo Montoya, 20, and Maritza Aguilar, 22, were found shot to death in a field at a greenhouse near 1600 West and 1600 North. Investigators believe the two were shot in a drug deal gone bad. Seth Broomhead, 20, of Riverton was booked into jail in October for investigation of double homicide. His court hearings are on hold while a psychological evaluation is conducted.
21. CLINTON, JUNE 30 — Annalee Christensen, 23, was shot three times and killed in her home, 1129 W. 1640 North about 6:20 a.m. Her boyfriend, James Thomas May III, was also shot in the arm and chest but managed to escape. Police arrested Trovon Donta Ross, 29 and booked in him into the Davis County Jail for investigation of homicide. A jury trial is scheduled for the end of May.
22. SALT LAKE CITY, July 5 — Eight-month-old Trinity Kale was killed by blunt force trauma. Her father, Christopher Paul Kale, 35, brought his daughter to LDS Hospital on July 5; she was pronounced dead on arrival. Doctors found internal bleeding, significant bruises and burns on the infant. They also noted she was malnourished and dehydrated. Following several weeks of investigation, charges were filed against Christopher Kale on Oct. 28. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 5.
23. SALT LAKE CITY, July 9 — Tamera Guliyan, 73, was strangled to death by her husband, Nikolay Guliyan, who then hanged himself. The couple was discovered by their daughter in their apartment near 120 South and 200 West. An exact motive for the murder-suicide has not been determined.
24. LOGAN, July 11 — Michael J. Boudrero was shot and killed, allegedly in a plot by his ex-wife and her boyfriend to collect on his life-insurance policy. Tamara Rhinehart, 44, and Craig Duncan Nicholls, 39, were arrested in Clearfield and charged with murder. Boudrero, a plumber, was allegedly lured to a construction site on a fictitious job. He was shot and his body thrown into a storage locker. He was found after his family reported him missing. Nicholls pleaded guilty in November to aggravated murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He filed a motion in December, however, to withdraw his plea. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Rhinehart for Feb. 5.
25. MAGNA, Aug. 7 — Sione Tuponuia was shot and killed in the parking lot of an auto store, 7245 W. 3500 South. Three male juveniles and one male adult were arrested. The shooting was believed to be gang-related.
26. SALT LAKE CITY, Aug. 8 — Sammy Neal Montgomery was allegedly stabbed to death by Raymond Manning, 44, near 400 South and 400 East. Both men were transients. The two were allegedly arguing prior to the stabbing over the purchase of a blanket. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 7.
27. OGDEN, Sept. 12 — Carson Thomsen, a 49-year-old transient, was stabbed multiple times and killed in a vacant field in the 100 block of 25th Street. Investigators believe Thomsen and another transient were drinking in the field. Police were still looking for the killer.
28. SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 23 — John Todd Irwin died after being shot in the head over a drug dispute. Irwin was in a hotel room at 1865 W. North Temple with his wife when Elizar Balbuene-Para, Salvador Torres-Garcia and a third unknown man entered their room. The men hit and kicked Irwin, according to court charges. Salvador Torres-Garcia then pulled out a gun and allegedly shot Irwin. The next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 26.
29. SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 25 — Leo P. Anderson, 69, was found bound and beaten to death in his basement apartment near 1200 East and Westminster Avenue (1900 South). Ira Eugene Hensley, 40, was arrested and charged with homicide. Hensley met Anderson under the guise that he wanted to have sexual relations with him. Instead, Hensley allegedly killed Anderson while robbing him. He was later arrested in Las Vegas. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 15.
30. SALT LAKE COUNTY, Sept. 28 — Braulio Cortez, 29, was shot twice in the face and killed in a cul-de-sac near 6100 South and 4200 West while trying to get away from two pursuing vehicles. Cortez's brother allegedly entered into a business venture with another man who claimed the brother owed him money. Eduardo Barba, 26, was charged with first-degree murder. His next court date was scheduled for Jan. 5.
31. SALT LAKE COUNTY, Oct. 6 — Brent Sumner, 39, was shot to death near 200 East and Gordon Lane (4340 South). Police arrested Allen Adolph Kelly, 27, later in the day at his parent's West Valley City home for investigation of the murder. Investigators believe Kelly shot Sumner because of an ongoing dispute over a woman. His next court date was scheduled for Jan. 26. A mental competency exam of Kelly was also ordered.
32. PARK CITY, Oct. 14 — Kautoke Tangitau, 30, was shot and killed, allegedly by rival gang members while attending a concert at Club Suede at Kimball Junction. Finau Tukuafu, 25, was charged with murder. Two other men were arrested by not charged with homicide. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 6.
33. SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 17 — The body of Fernando Ordonez, 49, was found behind a restaurant near 1600 South and 700 West. Police said Ordonez was beaten to death possibly over a drug dispute. No arrests have been made.
34. SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 18 — 24-year-old Juan Jose Carrillo Mendoza was stabbed to death, allegedly by 37-year old Ernie Marquez over a drug deal gone bad. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 8.
35. WEST VALLEY CITY, Oct. 23 — Eighteen-month-old Casey Borrow was killed while at the home of his foster mother near 3400 South and 6400 West. The infant died from massive head trauma and other internal injuries. Jeannette Ilene Gomez, 30, was charged with criminal homicide. Her next court date is scheduled for Jan. 26.
36. SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 27 — David Calbert, 40, was stabbed to death while working on a house. He managed to stumble into Mama's Southern Plantation Restaurant, 1394 S. West Temple, across the street looking for help when he died. No arrests have been made.
37. WEST VALLEY CITY, Nov. 5 — The bodies of Robert and Shelley Pack were found inside their home. Robert, 71, apparently shot Shelley, 52, with a high-caliber rifle before taking his own life.
38. WEST VALLEY CITY, Nov. 14 — Jose Morales Sanchez, 21, was gunned down in an apartment-complex parking lot near 3800 South and 2200 West. Police have few leads as to a motive or suspect.
39. WELLINGTON, Nov. 14 — 43-year-old Marvel Slom was shot and killed by his father-in-law, 86-year-old Claude Duncan, who then took his own life. The two apparently got into a verbal argument when Slom got home from working a graveyard shift. Police did not know what the argument was about. Several hours later, Duncan's daughter heard a gunshot in the house followed shortly by Duncan walking in to say he had killed her husband and was about to shoot himself. After a short struggle, Duncan broke away and shot himself on the front porch. It's the first homicide for the Carbon County Sheriff's Office since 1998.
40. SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 15 — Gerald J. Richards Jr., 54, was shot and killed with a rifle at his home, near 600 North and 700 West, while he was lying in his bed. His wife, Lilly Volhert Richards, 45, was charged with murder. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 7. Police said they learned after the homicide that there was an ongoing domestic problem of Lilly Richards abusing Gerald Richard, but no incidents were ever reported to authorities.
41. ST. GEORGE, Nov. 25 — Jordan Allgood, 43, was shot once in the chest and killed during an apparent robbery attempt. Allgood was a rare coin dealer at Allgood Coin at 61 S. 500 East. The store surveillance camera caught images of a man believed to be the murderer, but police have not yet identified him.
42. CLINTON, Dec. 21 — C.W. Larsen, 27, was allegedly shot and killed by his brother, 30-year-old Eric Paul Larsen, at their home near 1600 North and 700 West during an argument between the two. Police said alcohol was involved. Eric Larsen was charged with second-degree manslaughter.
43. DAVIS COUNTY, Dec. 25 — Luis M. Martinez, 28, Ogden, was stabbed multiple times along I-84 near South Weber. Jose Juan Rodriguez, 32, was arrested and booked into the Davis County Jail for investigation of homicide.
