PARK CITY — A drama about a teenage ballet dancer and a documentary about an animator were the big winners at this year's Slamdance Film Festival, which refers to its awards as "Sparkys."

Slamdance is a festival for movies snubbed by Sundance, and it runs in Park City concurrently with that higher profile event.

The Grand Jury Awards for best drama and best documentary features went, respectively, to Kevin Asher Green's "Homework" and Brett Ingram's "Monster Road."

Also winning Grand Jury Awards were "Freestyle," for best documentary short; "Crabwalk," best narrative short; "Goldfish Games," best ensemble cast; and "Nightingale in a Music Box," excellence in writing.

Audience "Sparkys" went to "Big City Dick," for best documentary feature; "Memron," for best narrative feature; and "Tackle Box," for best short.

"The Virile Man" won a special "Spirit of Slamdance" award, and the Kodak Vision Award for best cinematography went to "Graveyard Alive: A Zombie Nurse in Love."

The Slamdance jury included filmmakers Penelope Spheeris, Francine McDougall and Anthony Russo. The awards were announced Friday during ceremonies at the Snow Park Lodge in Deer Valley.
