PROVO — The jersey of four-time All-American Tina Gunn Robison will be retired Saturday. Gunn Robison, who wore No. 44, becomes the first female athlete to have her jersey retired at BYU.
The event will occur at halftime of the Utah-BYU game that tips off at 4 p.m. in the Marriott Center.
Gunn, who played for the Cougars from 1977 to 1980, had a record-setting career, playing three seasons under head coach Courtney Leishman, and one season with head coach Elaine Michaelis.
"This is a great honor for me. I was very surprised when I was contacted by women's athletics," Gunn Robison said. "I appreciate this great honor and opportunity. It has brought back great memories from my time at BYU."
As a senior in 1980, she led the nation in points per game at 31.2 and in total scoring with 967 points. In addition, she ranked fourth nationally in rebounding with an average of 14.9 per game. For her efforts she was named the Women's Sports Federation National Player of the Year.
In her senior year, she was also named Kodak All-America first team, American Women's Sports Federation first team all-American and was an honorable mention All-American for the Women's Basketball News Service.
The 6-3 center remains BYU's all-time leading scorer with 2,759 points. Gunn is also the all-time Cougar scoring leader averaging 27.3 points per game and all-time rebounder with a total of 1,492 boards. She ranks second in field goal percentage .569 (1107-1943) and holds BYU's single-game record for points with 56 vs. UNLV in 1979.
