SAN JOSE — TiVo Inc. filed a patent infringement lawsuit against EchoStar Communications Corp., claiming its Time Warp patent was violated.

The suit was filed in federal district court in Texas.

In a press release Monday, TiVo said inventions protected by the Time Warp patent include a method for recording one program while playing back another and watching a program as it is recording.

A spokesman for EchoStar, a major satellite television broadcaster, said the company hasn't received the lawsuit and couldn't comment on it.
