"At Ease, Soldier"
John Childrey died October 7, 2004 in his West Jordan home after a valiant three year battle with prostate cancer.
John was the eldest of seven children born to John, Sr. (deceased) and Carrie Dixon Childrey of Demopolis, AL. Upon graduation from U.S. Jones High, enlisted in U.S. Army, beginning a 21 year career. While stationed in Germany, John met and married the love of his life, Christina Marie Keck. They had two sons, Michell John Childrey (Henderson, NV) and Mark Antony Childrey (wife, Melissa West Jordan, UT). After her death in 1974, John married and divorced twice before finding true love again. He and Debbie K. Mattingly were wed in Oct. of 1984 and were blessed with a daughter, Kishoni K. Childrey (West Jordan, UT). John also shared in the raising of Debbie's son, Kaisen J. Ostler (West Jordan), from a previous marriage. After military retirement, John began a second career at Federal Reserve Bank. While employed there, he earned a BS degree from the Salt Lake City Extension Branch of Columbia College. He and Debbie opened their own business in July 1997, the Diaper Outlet. John loved life and truly did it 'his' way. He loved morning jogs, gardening, camping trips, BBQ ribs, the pups Kisha and Kikko, and of course, his beautiful grandchildren Skye, Caden and Ashlyn. John will be greatly missed by his family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and church members. He was especially close to his siblings: Ann Ash (Dave), Artemese Scott (Willie), Anita Rowser (Columbus) all of Demopolis, AL. Sandra Faye Kennard (Judge), Redford, MI; Ken Childrey (Julia), St. Louis, MO; and a sister, Brenda Stallworth (deceased). Numerous nieces and nephews will also miss 'Uncle John', as will his daughter, Katherine, from a previous relationship.
A viewing will be held at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, UT from 6-8 p.m. on Mon., Oct. 11 and again from 11-11:45 a.m. on Oct 12. Funeral service to follow at 12 noon. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens.
