A man was shot in broad daylight, collapsed and died in the driveway of a Rose Park house Thursday.
The victim was identified as Jeffrey L. Maestas, 21, Salt Lake City.
Detectives were searching for the gunman but did not release any information about him.
About 4:40 p.m., Maestas was driving a car west on 700 North. He pulled over at 1830 West, where another man was walking on the sidewalk, Salt Lake police detective Dwayne Baird said.
There was some sort of confrontation between the two men. The pedestrian "pulled out a gun and began to chase him back to his car as he was shooting at him," Baird said.
Maestas never made it back to the car. He fell in the driveway of a split-entry house facing 700 North. He died at the scene. The alleged gunman fled the scene in another vehicle, Baird said.
It was too soon to determine the motive for the confrontation and shooting, Baird said.
Maestas had no connection to the house or the people who live there, police said.
Eric Vanderhoef, 15, was eating dinner with his family at their house across the street when they heard gunfire.
"It was like gunshots, like five gunshots. My mom looked out the window and she saw someone running away," he said.
Neighbors congregated behind the police tape, in disbelief about the time and location of the shooting. The house is next to an apartment complex occupied by young families.
"I think it's dangerous. What about the kids in the neighborhood?" Kayla Wood said.
