Magma in the crater of Mount St. Helens glows in a photo taken Thursday at twilight from the Johnston Ridge Observatory. Scientists say the lava dome in the crater of the volcano has risen more than 300 feet since the last week of October. Magma, or molten rock, is reaching the surface at the rate of 7 to 8 cubic meters — about one large dump truck load — every second, said Jeff Wynn, chief scientist for volcano hazards at the observatory.
