1912 ~ 2004
Alex Smith left this mortal existence December 9, 2004 at his home in Tooele, UT.
He was born in Erda, Tooele County, Utah December 21, 1912 to Robert Heggie Smith and Janet Mcleod Smith. He graduated from Tooele High School and entered the University of Utah in 1933 and later graduated in ]941. He played on the University Varsity football team from 1933 to 1936.
He married Verna Cassity in 1942. The marriage was later sealed in Salt Lake Temple. He was employed at Hanford, Washington in 1943. He married Carla Johnson West in the Oakland Temple June 17, 1969.
Alex was active in the church and civic affairs and had a deep conviction of the restored gospel. He was the first bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Richland, Washington Second Ward from 1950-1965. His kindness and lively sense of humor endeared him to all. Alex was an honorable man and his influence was a benefit to everyone. We will miss him.
Alex was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Verna Cassity Smith; brothers, John (Ethel) Smith, Robert (Naomi) Smith, and infant brother, William; sisters, Ann (Larry) Siebers, Beth (Louis) Caple, Mary (Tom) Edwards, and Janet (Brent) Malin. He is survived by his wife, Carla; his children, Bruce (lan) Smith, Richard (Diann) Smith, Connie K. Barnes, David (Usa) Smith, and Gary (Kim) Smith; his stepchildren, Kathy (John) Hardie, Larry West, Diane (Rand) Aubry, Connie (Kent) Rhoten, and Curtis (Julia) West. Additional survivors include 40 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
On Wednesday December 15th there will be a viewing from 9:30-10:30 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. in the Tooele Utah Skyline Chapel, 1100 E. Skyline Drive. Interment will be in Richland, Washington.
