Italian tenor Giuseppe di Stefano is in intensive care at a hospital on the Kenyan coast following an attack by unknown assailants five days ago, a senior police officer said Sunday.

Di Stefano and his wife were attacked in their car Tuesday as they drove away from their villa in Diani, about 270 miles southeast of Nairobi, said Alex Rono, the senior police official in Coast Province.

Di Stefano, 83, is famous for his duets with Maria Callas. Now retired, the singer was a forebearer to tenors like Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo and considered one of the world's greatest voices in the '50s.
