March 2, 1904: Theodor Geisel is born in Springfield, Mass.

1925: Graduates from Dartmouth University and leaves to attend Oxford University.

1927: Marries Helen Palmer.

1927: Begins career as illustrator/cartoonist/advertising man.

1931: Is asked by Viking Press to illustrate a book of children's sayings, titled "Boners."

1937: "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" is published.

1948: Moves to LaJolla, Calif., and lives in a renovated watchtower.

1951: Wins Academy Award for Best Cartoon with "Gerald McBoing-Boing."

1957: "The Cat in the Hat" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" are published.

1967: Wife Helen dies of cancer.
