Like many of Dr. Seuss' delightful tales, "I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew" is an enjoyable story with a valuable lesson to be learned.
The book follows the adventures of a curious creature who finds himself the target of much abuse and leaves home for Solla Sollew where, as he is told, "they never have troubles! At least, very few."
However, his journey turns out to be a perilous one, filled with rain, a camel that comes down with the "gleeks" and an attack by vicious "Poozers."
When our hero reaches Solla Sollew, he discovers that even a town where they "never have troubles! At least, very few," still has its problems, and he decides to return home to confront the dilemmas from which he once fled.
This tale shows readers that while running away from one's problems may appear an attractive solution, it is no guarantee that trouble will not be encountered elsewhere. We learn that confronting that which plagues us, rather than trying to escape it, provides the real solution.
Delivered in the colorful, humorous style that Dr. Seuss is know for, "I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew" engages children in a fantasyland that provides real-life lessons. By teaching our children to read, we enable them to discover such kernels of wisdom for themselves.
