Petition drives to support a proposed federal constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman are under way in 24 states, including Utah, by Families for America Inc.
The nonprofit organization said it is moving ahead with petitions rather than waiting for Congress to act. "In light of the impending crisis in Massachusetts and the disregard for constitutional and statutory definitions of marriage across America, the time to act is now," said Arthur Taylor, Families for America president.
"The vast majority of people in the country support the traditional definition of marriage between a man and a woman, and it is imperative that the will of the people be heard rather than leaving the matter to the decision of a few courts.," Taylor said.
