SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — An undercover officer was shot to death in the city's first on-duty death of a police officer in 10 years, officials said Sunday.

The officer and his partner were shot late Saturday after they approached a man acting suspiciously, officials said.

"They were going to talk to him and called out to him, and that's when he turned around and started shooting," said Sgt. Neville Gittens.

Officer Isaac Espinoza, 29, died after he was shot twice. His partner, who was shot in the leg, was treated at a hospital and released.
