Sprint Corp. has been awarded rights to build and operate a wireless Internet network at the Salt Lake City International Airport.

Wes Dittmer, general manager of WLAN Services for Sprint, said the network is the company's second wireless airport venture, following one at Kansas City International.

Salt Lake's airport is the nation's 25th busiest airport and the 47th busiest in the world, according to the airport.

Dittmer said he expects aggressive competition in 2004 for the roughly 50 of the top 91 airports that don't already have wireless service.

"I'd guess by the end of 2005, a lot of this ought to have been worked out," he said.

Dittmer declined comment on how much network construction would cost or how much the airport would share in revenue generated by the service.

It's priced at $9.95 per connection per location for 24 hours of unlimited access or an unlimited plan for $49.95 per month.
