PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A former governor who admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl when he was Portland mayor almost 30 years ago is surrendering his law license.
Neil Goldschmidt, 63, informed the Oregon State Bar Association of his decision in a sworn statement dated Wednesday, according to The Oregonian. The bar announced the resignation Friday.
Goldschmidt, who was also transportation secretary during the Carter administration, passed the Oregon bar in 1967 but has been an inactive member and has not practiced for years.
The bar began investigating Goldschmidt last week after he admitted to the sexual contact last week after the Willamette Week newspaper told him it was going to reveal the relationship.
Bar officials will close the case as soon as the Oregon Supreme Court accepts the resignation, said Kateri Walsh, spokeswoman for the bar.
