Deseret Morning News editors, photographers, artists, reporters and headline writers were honored with 49 awards, including 13 first-place honors, Friday evening at the Utah Headliners Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists awards ceremony.
Journalists were recognized for their excellence at the 30th annual Utah Journalism banquet at the Marriott City Center in Salt Lake City.
Deseret Morning News employees swept several categories, including editorial writing, headline writing, page design, art/illustration and sports photography.
News special writer Dennis Romboy was recognized as best newspaper reporter in Utah for newspapers with a circulation above 50,000, and Lee Davidson placed third in that category.
In spot news reporting, the News received first place for "Leavitt to Washington," which followed former Gov. Michael Leavitt as he became director of the Environmental Protection Agency. The newspaper placed second for "Utahns saw tragedy," coverage of the Columbia shuttle disaster.
Lois M. Collins and Elaine Jarvik won first place in feature writing for "Some guy saves a life," an article about a charitable kidney donation.
Doug Robinson won first place for "Before and After: Athlete learned to live while dying of cancer," a sports feature piece. Dirk Facer placed first in general sports reporting for "One MOA win."
Jeffrey Allred claimed two first-place awards — one as best photographer and one for spot news photography.
