NEW YORK (AP) — Bernard Lefkowitz, an investigative journalist and author whose final book examined the gang rape of a mentally disabled girl by a group of popular high school students, has died. He was 66.

Lefkowitz died Friday of thymic carcinoma, a cancer of the thymic gland, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, his wife Rebecca Aikman said.

Lefkowitz's 1997 book, "Our Guys: The Glen Ridge Rape and the Secret Life of the Perfect Suburb," explored the 1989 gang rape of a mentally disabled girl and an affluent New Jersey suburb's willingness to rally around the perpetrators.
