CHICAGO (AP) — The new owners of the 84-year-old Fannie May candy brand announced plans Monday to open 30 Fannie May stores in Illinois and Indiana by the fall.
Some of the stores are former Fannie May locations, while others are new ones.
"Our goal is to build a Fannie May retail chain of strong, popular locations that will enable Fannie May to thrive for years to come," said Alpine Confections Co-President David Taiclet in a statement.
The Utah-based company already is making a few popular Fannie May favorites, including Mint Meltaways and Pixies.
Last month, Alpine Confections and Elmhurst-based North Development Co. successfully bid $38.9 million in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the rights to the Fannie May and Fanny Farmer brands, along with 31 retail stores. North Development would manage the stores.
Archibald Candy Corp., the former parent of Fannie May and Fanny Farmer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January after shutting down its Chicago manufacturing plant and more than 200 retail stores, costing about 3,600 people their jobs.
