Good for Todd Miller for sticking to his beliefs and forfeiting the right to play in the finals of the Utah State Amateur. One of my favorite ironies is people judging "religious" people for judging.

Let's remember this year's tournament for what Annie Thurman did do, rather than for what Todd Miller didn't do.

Mr. Miller's refusal to withdraw until he was a finalist and his assumption that the tournament organizers would reschedule the tournament to a more convenient day reveals an arrogance that unfortunately overshadows his beliefs about the Sabbath.

Todd Miller deserves praise for principled decisions to forfeit the championship. For Tommy Sharp to say it is disrespectful to the 106-year-old tournament is ludicrous. What about being disrespectful to God, who has been around much longer than 106 years?

I wonder what would have been the stand of the UGA had Clark Rustand also displayed the courage to declare his loyalty to his faith by refusing to participate in the Sunday playoff. Isn't it about time the UGA made the tournament available to all qualified Utah golfers?

Kudos to the UGA for standing up to the Miller family — the Pharisees of the golf world.

I, for one, am glad for the public discussion brought about by one player's refusal to quietly go away instead of taking a public and wonderfully timed stand.

Moving the tournament to a Saturday finish would dispel any Sunday participation problems. The aim of the UGA is to promote golf in the best possible way and this seems to be an easy solution.

All the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth is a very small reminder that sports do not control the world.

I will take Johnny Miller's shame more seriously when I see him resign his current, lucrative golf analyst position and rescind the Sunday opening of Thanksgiving Point.
