1923 ~ 2004
Spencer Stuart Gilman, a retired Carmel residential developer and contractor, died July 15, 2004 at home.
Born in Hudson, South Dakota December 26, 1923, he was eighty. He moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Carmel in 1977. Prior to entering the construction, he worked as a newspaper editor in Salt Lake City, Utah and as an economist for Safeway Stores, Western Pacific Railroad, Alexander & Baldwin and the Ports of Oakland and San Francisco. From 1966 - 1968, he was assistant County Executive of Santa Clara County.
Mr. Gilman was a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and received a MS in economics from the University of Utah, followed by doctoral study at the University of California at Berkeley.
He retired from the US Air Force Reserve in 1973 as a Lt. Colonel. In World War II, he was a bombardier on B29's, based on Tinian Island. Recalled to service in the Korean War, he was a B-50 nuclear crew officer in the Strategic Air Command.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Marjorie Gilman; sons, Scott and Tobin Gilman; grandchildren, Deanne and Robert Gilman and daughter-in-law, Dee Gilman. His first wife, Suzanne Weber of Miami, FL., was killed in an auto accident in 1951.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 23 at 1:00 at EI Carmela Cemetery under the direction of The Paul Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1184 Monroe St., Ste. 1-2, Salinas, 93902.
