To help people learn to take charge of diabetes and face its challenges, threats and gifts, the American Diabetes Association has published "Diabetes: A Guide to Living Well" by Ernest Lowe and Dr. Gary Arsham.
The book focuses on how to live successfully and positively with the disease, with emphasis on positive lifestyle changes.
Three different programs are provided: the moderate program, the intense program and the loose program, which are all designed to meet lifestyle needs and ensure people take care of themselves and their diabetes.
For example, a person under great stress at work and home may wish to follow the loose program at first. Someone most focused on diabetes control may find the moderate or intense program is best.
The book also covers topics such as handling diabetes complications, managing stress, avoiding hypoglycemia and more.
More than 18.2 million Americans have diabetes, about 6.3 percent of the population. One-third of those are unaware they have the diseases.
The book retails for $14.95 and is available at www.diabetes.org and at bookstores nationwide.
