A search-and-rescue team helped three teenage hikers return to safety after a day hike turned into a potentially dangerous run-in with heat and dehydration.

The hikers were in Corner Canyon near the Draper area Tuesday when they ran out of water and began to worry they were too tired and dehydrated to make it safely down.

They began their hike around 11 a.m., and around 2:30 p.m. one hiker used his cellular phone to call his mother, who contacted fire officials, Unified Fire Authority Capt. Michael Jensen said.

Crews spent almost two hours talking to the hikers by cell phone, often losing reception, before they were able to pinpoint their location, Jensen said. He said search-and-rescue workers reached the hikers around 4:30 p.m. and brought them safely to paramedics at the bottom of the canyon about 6 p.m.

Paramedics assessed the hikers and found they were all dehydrated, with one bordering on heat exhaustion. Additionally, one of the hikers had fallen and scraped his left arm, Jensen said. Other than that, they were unharmed.
