PROVO — Experience outscored youth in Thursday's Region 6 opener between rivals Provo and Timpview.
The Bulldogs, who boast a strong group of nine seniors, knocked off Timpview 3-2. It was Provo's first win over Timpview in eight years.
Despite the thrill of the win, Bulldog coach Cesar Cardoso tried to keep the game in perspective with his players.
"We cannot get caught up in beating Timpview," Cardoso said. "It's an important region win but nothing more. We are a decent team. If we maintain consistency like we had in the first 20 minutes, we are going to be tough to beat."
Provo was aggressive early and jumped to a quick 2-0 lead.
The first goal came in the third minute when senior Jana Davis connected with an open Amber Bosco down the middle of the field. Bosco took the pass and scored from 10 yards out.
Six minutes later Davis gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Sara Smith set up the goal by crossing a pass to Davis at the center of the 18-yard box. After being stopped on her first attempt, the Bulldog striker punched the ball into the back of the net.
After Provo's goal, Timpview slowed the Provo attack but still couldn't find the back of the net itself. In the 28th minute Timpview had two shots on goal off a corner kick that bounced off the crossbar.
Both of Timpview's goals came on penalty kicks after Provo was called for handballs in the penalty box. Candace Clark scored both, with the first coming in the 35th minute.
"They are a very good team with a good forward (Clark)," Cardoso said. "You have to watch their whole team. We played really well the first 25 minutes of the game, but I was real frustrated with how we played toward the end of the half."
In the 65th minute, Provo scored the game's most controversial goal. After a Bulldog shot, Timpview goalie Lindsey Freeze came out of the goal and made a diving stop. But with a Provo player on top of her, Cami Brimhall kicked the ball out of Freeze's hands and into the goal to up the lead to 3-1.
In the final two minutes, Clark connected on the second penalty kick to make the score 3-2.
Despite the early setbacks, Timpview coach Jim Davis is pleased with the continued improvement of his team. This year Davis has only three players who had played varsity on a consistent basis.
"They don't quit," he said. "They keep getting better."
