The Bachs. The Skywalkers. The Bushes. And now, the Eubanks.
If Mark and Kevin Eubank aren't exactly stepping into the immortal halls of fame that hold other father-son duos, at least the two will be working together at KSL-TV, Channel 5, beginning in mid-January.
The younger Eubank, Kevin, will start Jan. 19 as a second weatherman who will report remotely on weather phenomena and fill in when his father isn't the weather anchor during the 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. weeknight newscasts.
"We're very excited about having him here," said Steve Poulsen, marketing and promotions vice president for the station. "He's a very good meteorologist, and that's what it comes down to. He's a meteorologist, and he's got a love for weather just like his father."
Both father and son have meteorology degrees from the University of Utah and experience as weathermen at other Salt Lake television stations. Kevin Eubank has some experience reporting feature stories. The station hopes he will use those skills when he heads to Torino for the 2006 Winter Games in February.
Kevin will transition into the anchor's slot as his father approaches retirement, but Mark Eubank will be with KSL-TV at least until the end of 2006, news director Con Psarras said.
"In terms of splitting it up, we have several creative ways that we're going to do that to expand our weather reporting duties," Psarras said. "He'll fill in for Mark on a variety of shows, and they'll work together."
Neither Mark nor Kevin Eubank returned phone calls seeking comment Monday.
Mark Eubank has long professed a love for the weather, collecting precipitation and temperature data from his Bountiful house and wearing white suit jackets when snow is in his forecast.
He has parlayed his passion into two weather-consulting firms and a decade of trying to predict each day's weather one year in advance. The latter scheme has not yet had the luck he hoped for, but he plans to return to it sometime soon.
