Biotechnology pioneer Dale A. Stringfellow, 60, died March 18 in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Stringfellow founded three successful biotechnology companies: Myriad Genetics Inc., Cognetix Inc. and Acacia Biosciences.

The former Salt Lake City resident directed many companies, most recently serving as president and CEO of Berlex Laboratories.

Stringfellow also served as vice president of pre-clinical cancer research at Bristol-Myers Squibb. He was vice president of Collagen Corporation and also spent 10 years researching cancer and virology at the Upjohn Company.

He was active in cancer research and enjoyed fishing and backpacking trips. He died after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

A funeral was held in California last week, and the family is planning a memorial in Salt Lake City.
