Question:My neighbors often play their music really loud so that I can hear it. The music often contains offensive language. Is there any way to stop them from playing music that is loud and vulgar?

Response: Often times, residents have their quiet enjoyment of their property disrupted by an insensitive neighbor who may be playing their music too loudly. The first step in resolving this issue is to have a civil dialogue with the neighbor to urge them to follow the rules of civility and decency by respecting the fact that others may not desire to hear their music.

However, it is important to note that this does not always happen. The city does have a noise ordinance that covers construction and other noises. This ordinance allows for construction and other activities to occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Outside those hours, the city's police department may be contacted to report the noise infraction. The police department deals with noise and loud music complaints on a regular basis and can be contacted on the non-emergency line at 840-4000.
