MEN'S TENNIS: The Cougar men's tennis team fell 4-3 to San Diego State, in a hard fought battle Saturday at the SDSU Tennis Stadium.

During warm-up, Shane LaPorte, BYU's No. 3 player, split his eye open with his racket after a hard swing. Trainers quickly worked to patch up his eye. But in doubles action, the BYU pair of Chip Hand and LaPorte lost, 8-4.

"I could tell that Shane wasn't at his best," head BYU coach Brad Pearce said.

For the remaining doubles, No. 1 Jose Lechuga and Nima Roshan evened the score by defeating the Aztec's Armando Carrascosa and Benedikt Stronk, 8-5. Dominik Kaufhold and James Ludlow won 8-3, assuring the doubles point to the Cougars.

The Cougars have a small breather before taking on the University of Utah in Provo on Thursday at noon.

Utah

MEN'S TENNIS: The University of Utah men's tennis team suffered a close (4-3) loss to No. 40 UNLV on Saturday. With two losses over the weekend, the Utes fall to 12-5 on the season and 0-2 in the Mountain West Conference. In doubles, Miron Mann and Zach Ganger teamed up to defeat Henner Nehles and Avriam Salomon (8-5) at No. 1. Ute duo of Jason Yap and Nick Coutts also picked up win, (8-4) over Joel Kielbowicz and David Campbell at No.2.

Despite winning the doubles point, Utah only managed to take the No. 3 and 6 singles. Coutts topped Romain Massaro (6-4, 6-4) at No. 3 and Yap earned a (6-1, 6-1) victory over Jonathan Hooper at No. 6.The Utes wrap up conference play next week with matches against BYU, Air Force and New Mexico in Provo.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: The University of Utah women's tennis team (12-7) plays three matches, two against conference opponents, this week in Colorado. On Thursday, the Utes match up against Denver on the Pioneers' home courts at 2 p.m. Then the Utes head to Colorado Springs for MWC action against Air Force on Saturday and New Mexico on Sunday.

Utah State

SOFTBALL: For the fifth straight game, the Utah State softball team failed to score a run as the Aggies dropped a 6-0 decision to Long Beach on Sunday. The Aggies fell to 7-19 overall and 1-8 in Big West play, while LBSU improved to 23-12 and 3-0. Utah State travels to Provo for a doubleheader at BYU on Tuesday.

Southern Utah

TRACK & FIELD: Southern Utah's men's and women's outdoor track and field teams combined to break three school records, notch four event victories and recorded one NCAA regional qualifying mark at the Cal State Northridge Invitational Saturday in Northridge, Calif.

The Thunderbird women accounted for two of the school records and two event wins, highlighted by sophomore Brittany Watters, who broke the SUU record in the 400-meters with an event-winning time of 55.43. Sophomore Marie Muscato claimed the school's all-time standard in the pole vault by clearing 12-0 to place third in that event, while junior Monica Holmes took home the gold in the javelin with a throw of 120-11, the fifth-best mark in school history.

Junior Troy Gent picked up the SUU men's lone event win, doing so in record-breaking fashion, as he shattered the school's discus record by nearly six feet with an NCAA regional qualifying throw of 186-2.

SOFTBALL: Southern Utah's softball team completed a sweep of UMKC Saturday, as the Thunderbirds topped the Kangaroos 6-1 and 5-4 to move to 7-1 in Mid-Con play and 10-16-1 overall. UMKC dipped to 0-4 in the Mid-Con and 4-26 overall.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: SUU's women's tennis team picked up two more wins at the IUPUI-hosted cluster Saturday, topping Chicago State and UMKC by 6-1 scores to finish the two-day tournament 3-1 to move to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in Mid-Continent Conference play.

Utah Valley

SOFTBALL: The Utah Valley State softball team lost its final game of the Wolf Pack Tourney to Nevada on Sunday 14-6. Rachel Hartgrove had three hits in the game including her team-best sixth home run. Emily Cardenas also added two hits in the game. The two players combined for five of Utah Valley's seven hits. Utah Valley State is back in action on Wednesday when the Wolverins host Utah in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

BASEBALL: Utah Valley State will take on BYU for the third time this season and Utah for the first time in 2005. Monday's game against the Cougars will be at home in Parkway Crossing Stadium, while Tuesday's game against the Utes will be in Salt Lake City. BYU holds a 2-0 advantage after winning the first two games of the series. The Wolverines and Utes are tied 3-3 all-time as they faced of six times in 2004.
