KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Davy Arnaud scored in the 48th minute, and Bo Oshoniyi earned his third shutout of the season in the Kansas City Wizards' 1-0 victory over the MetroStars on Wednesday night.
Chris Klein made a nice lead pass to Sasha Victorine, who was breaking through the middle of the MetroStars' penalty area. Victorine quickly shuffled the ball to his left to an open Arnaud, who easily beat goalkeeper Zach Wells with a shot inside the left post.
The Wizards (3-2-3) moved into third place in the Eastern Conference, while the MetroStars (2-3-3) lost their first road game of the season.
Kansas City controlled the attack from start to finish. The Wizards nearly scored in the 19th minute when a corner kick by Jose Burciaga was headed by Jimmy Conrad. The deflection was on goal, but the ball was headed away by Amado Guevara.
The MetroStars' best scoring chance came in the 31st minute when John Wolyniec tried to receive a floated pass over the top from Guevara but he couldn't control it. Oshoniyi got a hand on the ball, allowing Conrad to clear it out of danger.
EARTHQUAKES 1, RAPIDS 0: At Denver, Alejandro Moreno scored in the 76th minute and Pat Onstad stopped seven shots for his third shutout, helping the San Jose Earthquakes beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 Wednesday night.
Moreno is the kind of player who takes a beating because he likes to hold onto the ball. He was battered again, but got the better end of it this time.
"He takes a lot of abuse out there, but he's not afraid to dish it out," Earthquakes coach Dominic Kinnear said. "He's a very physical player and he never backs down. He's not afraid of anybody."
